CHAPTER 18

“That was fruitless.” Click finished picking the beef from between the wide noodles.

Scatter stole the noodles from Click’s plate. “So, what’s new? Every time you visit Kayla something bad happens. Or something weird, at any rate.”

“That’s because she’s evil,” Click said. “I think she wants to take me out of the supernatural investigation business. Make me go back to being an office drone. Regular paychecks, health benefits.”

“Who needs that?” Scatter snorted. “Stability!”

Click slumped in her chair. “I feel exhausted. Like I cast a big spell.”

“You did that Tupperware thing,” Scatter shrugged. “And that truth spell earlier.”

“Guess I did.” She could barely keep her eyes open. “I’m gonna go lay down.”

They had rearranged the office for maximum privacy in the living area. Still, as she lay in bed, Click could overhear the low conversation. Scatter’s hushed voice was tinged with concern.

“I don’t know, should we just keep Click away from her sister?” Scatter said.

“Family drama,” Walter said. “We shouldn’t get involved.”

“Click says she’s evil,” Scatter said. “Every time I’ve met her, she seemed nice.”

“That’s how evil works,” Walter said. “It hides in plain sight, wraps itself in niceties, in a thin shroud of false beauty, revealing itself rarely.”

“I guess that sorta describes Kayla. If she is evil, and not just a trigger for Click.”

A trigger, Click thought. Was that all it was? Seeing Kayla set off her deeper emotional issues? Even if that was the case, how did she get on top of 555 California Street? Click couldn’t fly, or teleport, or do any other super-powerful magic. Not yet, anyway. It took witches decades to master such skills. Could Kayla do any of that? Click didn’t know much about the dark powers gifted to her sister. Other than the evil bit.

Toward the front of the office, Scatter and Walter decided on an old movie. The volume was low as they streamed it. Click didn’t recognize the opening music or the voices of the actors. In a short while, she drifted off.

She woke to sunlight following a dream she couldn’t remember. Whatever haunted her sleep gave her an idea. It didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Click definitely needed to speak with the other two charm school dropouts.

After she’d showered and dressed, she found Walter absent. As someone who didn’t sleep, he had a pre-dawn routine. For whatever reason, he had a fascination for the things that occurred when most people were still asleep.

Scatter had run backgrounds on both Elspeth Behr and Skye Diamond, but she had done it on her phone. Click didn’t think it was polite to check someone else’s cell phone. She could just wait for Scatter to wake up, but as a raccoon shifter, she tended toward the nocturnal.

She opened the laptop sitting on the reception desk and looked up Horsepucky. The restaurant didn’t open until 2 p.m. Click thought that was weird. Two hours after lunch and four hours before an early dinner? Not that she was an expert on the restaurant business.

Walter walked in. “Aah!”

Click looked up from the computer.
